Many years ago, I learned the value of communication to advance my art career. I used to think that my job was to make the art and it was someone else’s job to talk or write about it. It did not take long for me to realize that, as artists, we need to communicate effectively if we want to successfully take our art to the next level.
It is of no surprise that some of the most successful artists today know how to communicate and connect their work to their audience effectively. Failure to be clear just creates confusion and prevents you from advancing your art career the way you would like it to. In this blog post, I’m sharing with you three things you need in order to communicate effectively.
Communicate Who You Are
Let’s face it, social media has made all of us visible to the world. We all have a cyber-stage that we can get on to scream to the world. The problem is that everyone is doing the same thing at the same time. Therefore, communication is overwhelming and confusing. We are constantly sending mixed messages. Who really are you? What makes you unique from everyone else calling for attention? What are your unique qualities that you can capitalize upon to connect with the audience that identifies with you? Understand who you are and communicate it with clarity in and out of cyberspace.
Communicate What You Do
So, not only we are all screaming about who we are but we are also sharing everything that we do. And some people really share a lot more than others want to know. When it comes to your art career, you need to clearly define and communicate what you do as an artist. Be specific, clear and concise. I am not talking about your long art statement that not many read outside of the art world. I am talking about the essence of what you really do.
Communicate Why It Matters
To make things more interesting not only do we need to communicate with clarity who we are and what we do but also why in the world it matters. Telling your specific story and contextualizing your work is what help you find your ideal audience. You do not have to win everybody to like your work. All you need is a growing audience that identifies with your story and responds to your work. What matters to you will matter to a few others. Perhaps many others. It is ok if some people don’t care about you or your work. I see so many artists that feel like everyone has to like their work and get disappointed when a gallery or curator or others don’t respond to it. Move on and focus on finding those who do.
